The Great Sea Lochs – design and sustainability on the sea

17 – 24th Aug, Ullapool to Mallaig

This week will be led by sustainable designer, maker and ‘nurdler’, Alice Kettle, inventor of the NURDkit, and is a brilliant opportunity to learn about sustainability from an expert. Alice lives in Sweden where she currently studies furniture design and runs community recycling projects, as well as being a past Scotland rep for Surfers Against Sewage in Edinburgh.

Against a backdrop of the ocean plastic pollution crisis, Alice will be examining what part design can play in sustainability; 70% of waste comes from the design stage, so we’ll be asking what are designers doing to combat this, and exploring the life cycle of products with creative workshops onboard (materials provided), like plastic and toxin-free sun cream and toothpaste, and perhaps even a toothbrush! With two thirds of the world population projected to live in urban areas by 2050 (UN, May 2018), it is crucial that we consider a product’s life cycle and do not become disconnected from how the materials are sourced.

Sailing south from Ullapool, we’ll visit the Summer Isles, dramatic Loch Torridon and on through the tidal narrows at Kyle towards the fishing town of Mallaig. This dramatic coastline is Britain’s answer to the fjords!

We’ll be sailing past a coastline remote from the land, but which offers plenty to explore by sea. Our aim will be to find a beautiful anchorage every evening where we can explore ashore. It will be a chance to get up close and personal with the sea and learn to sail from your onboard instructor. And in common with Sail Britain’s ethos, we’ll have a chance to learn about ocean conservation, deploy our microplastics net, and take part in the various citizen science projects we’ll be conducting throughout the summer.

The trip fee of £695 covers the cost of the boat, crew, all equipment and training you’ll need onboard, as well as food, fuel and gas for the week. Not included is your travel to and from the start/end points of the voyage and any expenses ashore, although these tend to very limited out in the wilds!
